Take action for West Africa for World Humanitarian Day
08 August 2012

Islamic Relief is participating in World Humanitarian Day

On August 19, Islamic Relief is taking part in World Humanitarian Day. NGOs will be aiming to reach 1 billion people across the globe, asking them to commit individual acts of good. Islamic Relief is asking people to take action for West Africa.

As many as 20 million people are facing chronic food shortages across the Sahel region of West Africa - some of whom are on the brink of starvation.

Resilience has been debilitated in West Africa due to cyclical droughts, poverty, desertification, political conflict and insufficient food production - and with climate change things are only set to get worse.

What people need in West Africa now right now is emergency relief, but wouldn’t be great if there were long-term solutions that really allowed people to stand on their feet?

What the Sahel needs is long-term water solutions and not just handouts.

People certainly need emergency assistance now, but if interventions in West Africa are not long-term, it may be the same story year-on-year.

Take Action:
1. Raise awareness about the importance of long-term assistance and water solutions.
Africa is always presented to us as an intractable problem, as if poverty and food crises are inevitable. But for thousands of years, African’s have preserved rainwater through man-made holes dug in the ground. With the onset of climate change, all we need to do is upscale these solutions.

Organise events / Speak to your friends and family / Write articles.

2. Share “In Hope of a Harvest” on your social media.
Islamic Relief is working to eradicate extreme poverty in rural Mali through sustainable water solutions focusing on women and children. One of our short documentaries, “In Hope of a Harvest”, depicts Kadia Samake from Ouelesebougou village in Mali  and the impact a micro-dam project will have on her and her family.

3. Pray for rain in West Africa

Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) advised people make supplication during times of drought:

"Allahumma-aghithna, Allahumma-agithna, Allahumma-agithna"
"O Allaah, relieve us, O Allaah, relieve us, O Allaah, relieve us."

"Allahummas-qina ghaythan mugheethan maree-an muree’an, nafi’an, ghayra dar, ‘ajilan ghayra ajil"
"O Allah, send upon us helpful, wholesome and healthy rain, beneficial not harmful rain; now, not later.”

"Allahummas-qi-‘ibadaka wa baha-idaka, wanshur raHmataka wa aHee baladakal mayeet"
"O Allaah, provide water for Your servants and Your cattle, spread out Your mercy and resurrect Your dead land."
