Islamic Relief food supplementary programme in Wajir
19 August 2011

Nakar carrying her one-year-old son Abokar

Islamic Relief carries out a supplementary feeding program in the village of Barmil in Wajir, Kenya. Twenty-year-old Nakar carries her one-year-old son Abokar to the program. Abokar has already been registered and identified as a child that needs to be included in the program. This kind of work is vital to prevent malnourishment in children. It is programs like these that Islamic Relief conducts across the drought stricken region that his having a positive effect on the population.

The majority of people in Barmil were pasturists, but lost their livestock due to the drought. The water sources dried up and people are now dependent on water trucking. This is when water is delivered to them by a truck that carries a water container. Across this harsh and arid landscape that has no roads that can be very difficult and not very frequent.

Nakar has two children and relies on water being brought from the nearest town, Wajir, which is at least a one hour drive from the village. She has no transport. Nakar has been totally dependent on NGO’s for the last six years. It is now Islamic Relief that is fulfilling this need.

Balig carries one-year-old Amina

Abdul Rahman Ahmed has been spotted by the Islamic Relief workers. They have weighed and measured him; he is malnourished. He will now be added to the supplementary feeding program.

His mother Balig has four children, she carries one-year-old Amina on her back.

“All our livestock died, we only have what Allah gives us,” she tells me. This story resonates with most people in Wajir as the majority of families I have come across have lost their livestock.

Islamic Relief is only able to target the most vulnerable through having staff on the ground working tirelessly with local communities so that all our aid reaches those that need it most. Islamic Relief is responding to the Horn of Africa Crisis and is best placed to do this because we have been working in the region for a number of years.
