Islamic Relief workers distributing aid

Munira bravely showed off her wounds to us without flinching. She seems resilient despite being forced to seek refuge in a foreign land without her friends, away from her home and living in squalor. Thousands of Syrians have poured into north Lebanon since May 2011 using illegal border crossings to escape the violence unleashed on protesters by security forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

It is estimated that 7,000 Syrians have been displaced amongst Lebanese villages. The displaced fled with no possessions save the clothing on their backs and sought refuge predominantly with families or friends in neighbouring Lebanon. Most of the displaced have relocated to Wadi Khalid. Wadi Khalid is one of the most impoverished areas in Lebanon. Assisting the displaced Syrians has overstretched the support capacity of host families in terms of demand on their limited resources such as increases in utility payments, food expenses, sharing of limited space and basic household items.

Islamic Relief is helping families like Munira's through its emergency relief programme where we are distributing food packs, hygiene kits, toys, water and blankets.
