Statement on latest violence in Rakhine, Myanmar
02 November 2012
.
"The most pressing needs being addressed by our programme is the provision of food, shelter and the provision of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities."
Islamic Relief deplores the latest violence and killing in Rakhine state of Myanmar resulting in huge displacement and calls upon the government and all communities to make every effort towards restoring peace and normality. Islamic Relief believes that while stability and security are the immediate priority and humanitarian imperative, greater access and protection of all communities and aid workers are also vitally important.
Islamic Relief is currently operational in Myanmar and working in cooperation with the state government of Rakhine. The most pressing needs being addressed by our programme is the provision of food, shelter and the provision of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.
We call upon all supporters to continue their valuable
donations
towards our work in Myanmar so that Islamic Relief staff can respond to the challenges ahead.
Islamic Relief’s history of work in Myanmar dates back to 2008 and 2009, during which we provided $1.2 million of relief and recovery support to over 100,000 people affected by Cyclone Nargis, including work directly with Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, and Muslim communities.
Working with these communities and local NGOs, we rebuilt schools and decontaminated drinking water ponds as well as provided food, hygiene and household kits, shelters, schooling supplies, fishing boats, and agricultural support in Dedaye, Labutta and Kyauktan townships.
