World Congress of Peace and Solidarity, Algiers 3-4 July 2002

There were over 1000 participants, gathered from all four continents.

Islamic Relief took part in the World Congress of Peace and Solidarity in Algiers, Algeria in July 2002. The two-day conference was launched by the President of the Republic of Algeria, Mr Abdelaziz Bouteflika.


IR was invited to the conference by Dr Djamel Ould-Abbes, the former Algerian Minister for Social Action and National Solidarity. Dr Hany El Banna, President of IR and Mr Wahid Abassi of IR France represented IR. There were over 1000 participants, gathered from all four continents.

The IR delegates were welcomed by Mr As Saeed AlTayeb BilAyez, the recently appointed Algerian Minister for Social Action and National Solidarity. Local press and radio expressed great interest in Islamic Relief, and Dr


Hany and Mr Abassi were interviewed by several national newspapers including Al Yaum, El Bilad and Al Fajr.


Mr Abassi presented a talk to the conference about 'Globalisation of Solidarity towards a Balanced World Order'. He spoke about the need to make globalisation more human, and to find a place for the poor in Globalisation.


On the final day Mr Abassi attended a dinner hosted by the President of Algeria where he met the Algerian Foreign Minister, Mr Abdelaziz Belkhadem. He spoke to him about IR's assistance in Algeria during the floods in 2001. He also met the President, Mr Bouteflika, who welcomed IR and Mr Abassi to Algeria.

Mr Abassi met a number of international figures during the conference including: Mr Abdel Kabariti, the former Jordanian Prime Minister, Mr Adel Imam, the actor and UN Peace and Goodwill Ambassador, Mr Jerry John Rawlings the Former Ghanaian President, Mr Ruud Lubbers, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), And Mr. Bouabdallah Ghulamallah, the Algerian Minister of Religious Affairs

Mr Abassi took the opportunity to speak to them about Islamic Relief's aid and development projects around the world.
