We ask the international community to provide humanitarian support - Shiferaw Shigutie (SNNPR)
Heavy rains and flooding in Ethiopia's South Omo Valley have killed 620 people and displaced 22,000. The number of missing is not known, and the death toll is expected to increase.

The first floods hit Dire Dawa city more than a week ago, killing hundreds. Then the Omo river burst its banks causing further flooding.

Other rivers in the Tigray Amhara and Oromia regions have also burst their banks.

More flooding expected

Heavy rain continues to fall in the highlands and the water levels in rivers throughout the region are expected to rise. The Awash and Wadi Shabelle rivers are at risk of bursting their banks.

The Government of Ethiopia has asked for humanitarian support for more than 10,000 displaced people.

Shiferaw Shigutie, the president of Ethiopia's Southern Nation and Nationalities Peoples' Region said "Now it is beyond our capacity. We ask the international community to provide humanitarian support."

IR Action

Islamic Relief has allocated an initial €10,000 towards the emergency response.

An emergency team from our Ethiopia office has been deployed and will begin distributing aid as part of the initial response.
