Over 300,000 people have been affected

Sri Lanka began to experience monsoons in November, but the unexpectedly high rainfall has affected over one million people.  Over 300,000 people have been forced to leave their homes as floods have crippled the country, cutting off many residents and causing sewage lines and tanks to overflow.

The Health Ministry has said that there is a real concern about a rise in diseases such as typhoid and diarrhoea. The worst affected region is the Eastern Province.

Islamic Relief Sri Lanka will be providing essential survival items such as dried food, warm clothes, mosquito nets, kitchen utensils, towels and sleeping mats to people affected by the floods in the Batticolo and Ampara districts. Our local office will continue to monitor the situation.
