Islamic Relief supports flood victims in Pakistan

Islamic Relief is in Pakistan providing life saving aid to people affected by the recent floods. The most vulnerable are being given temporary shelter, food packs and other essential items to assist them during the worst humanitarian disaster to hit the region since last year’s devastating floods.

“It is so vital that we are on the ground, responding to what’s happening right now in Pakistan”, said Ateeq Rehman, an Islamic Relief aid worker.

“So many people need our help and we’re out there supporting them.”

The region of Sindh is the worst hit by the recent floods which was caused by heavy rainfall across South Asia during the annual monsoon season.

Houses and crops have been devastated across flood hit areas. 1.4 million houses have been either destroyed or heavily damaged while 67% of food stock has been wiped out. 1.8 million people have been displaced across the region and 57% of them are women.

“People need food, shelter, clean water, medicines – all the basic essentials of life, everything that normally becomes difficult for them to access when a crisis like this takes place”, added Ateeq.

Islamic Relief has distributed close to 5,000 food packs so far whilst the installation of water tanks and the distribution of water purification tablets across affected areas has led to thousands of people having access to clean water.

“5,000 households have benefited from our help so far and we are aiming, initially, to reach 30,000 families, which works out as around 210,000 people – the majority of who are women and children”, said Ateeq

“But the vital work we are able to do depends on the amount of resources we have so we desperately need more donations so we can continue to reach more and more people in need of our support”.

Islamic Relief has been in Pakistan responding to the needs of the most vulnerable flood victims since last year’s floods and continues to support people affected by the current crisis.
