Islamic Relief Bangladesh continues to implement successful relief and development programs. Currently operational in 38 districts, Islamic Relief Bangladesh in 2012 is focusing strongly on Disaster Risk Reduction and Humanitarian Assistance and Early Recovery Projects. These key projects are responding to communities affected by floods, cyclones and other natural disasters and supporting them in preparing for and mitigating future disasters. Over the past three decades, Bangladesh experienced more than 170 large scale natural disasters that killed millions of people and affected more than 400 million people. Seven of the 10 deadliest cyclones of the twentieth century hit Bangladesh in the past 40 years. The Disaster Risk Reduction Program will help communities and institutions to mobilize for effective risk reduction.
As well as these key projects, Islamic Relief seeks to promote sustainable economic and social empowerment by working with local communities in times of disasters as well as through development programs in the sectors of child rights, gender, water and sanitation, education, and sustainable livelihoods.
