possible for them" Moustafa Osman
Islamic Relief has signed an extension to an existing contract with UNHCR, to manage the Al Saloum camp for Libyan and third country national refugees. The contract extension is valued at £1.7 million and will cover June to December 2012. The original agreement signed in February was worth £800,000. The camp is located in Egypt on the Libyan border and houses around 2,000 people who fled violence in Libya in 2011.
Under this agreement, Islamic Relief will coordinate psycho-social support as well as the provision of food, water, healthcare and sanitation facilities for camp residents. This contract is the fifth agreement between Islamic Relief and UNHCR in recent months. Islamic Relief is already managing UNHCR camps for displaced people in Yemen, Libya and Tunisia. This latest agreement is a further testament to the growing relationship between Islamic Relief and UNHCR around the world.
Moustafa Osman, Head of Islamic Relief’s Humanitarian Department said “The camp is a last resort. Despite the fact we believe this camp is a temporary solution for these refugees, who have the right to a life of dignity, we are doing our utmost to make sure life is as normal as possible for them. While we are providing food, water, healthcare and sanitation facilities, we are also providing recreational and educational activities. We believe these refugees have suffered very much and deserve the very best”.
