Project Overview

Due to recent civil disturbances and war, hundreds of thousands of Afghan nationals have been displaced in their country seeking refuge in neighbouring cities and towns.

The overwhelming majority of these are children, 98% of which have to work on the streets to make ends meet, an often dangerous task.

This project provides safe and secure means for these children to become economically independent.

Project Background

Due to continued conflicts in Kabul many people have been killed, disabled or displaced and this has had a perceptible and profound effect on the city's children. Many children have lost their parents, have parents that are disabled, or belong to families that have been displaced.

Being left with no where to turn to, many of these have ended up in the streets of major cities such as Kabul, doing menial work just to get by.

Most street children have been deprived of education due to war, financial constraints and displacement;

Project Objectives

  • To improve the economic background of Afghan street children in Kabul and prevent them doing futile work.

  • To develop the sense of financial independence by providing technical/vocational training for the poor street working children.

Project Activities

Aschiana, a local aid agency, will open up a centre and this project will provide all the necessary start up assets.

The following activities will be undertaken:

  • Identifying children to join the programme;
2,475 children will receive the equivalent of 200 rupees per month for the period of six months whilst they benefit from attendance of the centre.

We anticipate that 70% of the street children will be orphans.

Islamic Relief’s Work

"Islamic Relief is striving for a fairer world. Our mission is to help the poor and needy to live sustainable, self-reliant lives within safe and caring communities. Our work is guided and shaped by the core values of accountability, humanitarianism, neutrality and impartiality, inclusiveness, integrity and co-operation, all of which are also integral to the Islamic faith."
Dr Hany El Banna - Founder of Islamic Relief

Islamic Relief was established in 1984 and our unique approach is the result of these many years of hands-on experience.

  1. Where possible we adopt a community partnership-based approach; encouraging community involvement, understanding and ownership of projects.
  2. We run the majority of our field projects ourselves, giving us direct insight into the problems faced and how best to solve them.
  3. We aim to empower those we help in order to achieve sustainable results.
  4. Though our emergency response teams are quick to respond to emergencies around the world, we continue to support communities long after the initial media interest has died down.
  5. We recruit staff locally to benefit from their local knowledge. This ensures that we are culturally sensitive and allows us to reach communities and areas other organisations cannot.
  6. Where necessary we coordinate our work with other reputable aid agencies, local organisations and governments.
