Project Overview

The project – which began in January 2008 and will reach completion in December 2009 – will be implemented in the three major villages of the Tilaberi region; Tolo, Simiri and Kandoum. It is being implemented by Islamic Relief Niger in close collaboration with the Niger Government’s Department of Agriculture Development and local community leaders and aims to help the targeted communities cope with the food crisis by improving their opportunities for income generation and food processing activities.

Project Background

The most recent UNDP report on Human Development has listed Niger as the poorest country in the world. Worse, in the year 2005, the country faced a serious food crisis due to the effects of drought and locust invasion on a people’s already fragile livelihoods. As a result, food availability has considerably reduced in the country; particularly in the rural areas where the majority of population is concentrated and is heavily dependent on their traditional farming and cattle breeding practices, to survive. In response to the crisis, the Government of Niger and the international community mobilized their resources and undertook numerous measures to address the needs of the people.

Project Objectives

  • To help the vulnerable communities better cope with the food crisis situation during periods of food shortages
  • To help communities manage their resources for improvement in their livelihoods.
  • To support the rehabilitation of three community cereal banks in Tolo, Simiri and Kandoum villages.
  • To support women in carrying out income generation and food processing activities.
  • Project Activities

  • Supporting the rehabilitation of three community cereal banks.
  • Equipping three women community based organizations with grinding machines.
  • Supporting women in carrying out off-season gardening activities.
  • Supporting 230 women beneficiaries in undertaking sheep breeding activities.
  • Supporting women in food oil extraction form their peanut produce.
  • Beneficiaries

The project will directly benefit 230 women and indirectly benefit over 7,000 people, living in the three villages of Simiri, Tolo and Kandoum.

    How Islamic Relief Helps

"Islamic Relief is striving for a fairer world. Our mission is to help the poor and needy to live sustainable, self-reliant lives within safe and caring communities. Our work is guided and shaped by the core values of accountability, humanitarianism, neutrality and impartiality, inclusiveness, integrity and co-operation, all of which are also integral to the Islamic faith."
Dr Hany El Banna - Founder of Islamic Relief

Islamic Relief was established in 1984 and our unique approach is the result of these many years of hands-on experience.

  • Where possible we adopt a community partnership-based approach; encouraging community involvement, understanding and ownership of projects.
  • We run the majority of our field projects ourselves, giving us direct insight into the problems faced and how best to solve them.
  • We aim to empower those we help in order to achieve sustainable results.
  • Though our emergency response teams are quick to respond to emergencies around the world, we continue to support communities long after the initial media interest has died down.
  • We recruit staff locally to benefit from their local knowledge. This ensures that we are culturally sensitive and allows us to reach communities and areas other organisations cannot.
  • Where necessary we coordinate our work with other reputable aid agencies, local organisations and governments.
